How to prevent re-infection living together with a lot of people

Post by minhle96 »

Hi everyone, I would like to share my H.Pylori experiences, I am 24 years old living in Vietnam. During April 20 I decided to cut back on my calories intake to lose weight, I usually only drink a protein shake in the morning and eat whatever my family cook for me for lunch and dinner, I don't know if this is a coincidence or not but my gastritis symptoms happen at this time, so I am guessing restricted diet and doing a lot of crunches and abs workout is what caused this problem. I ended up going to a hospital to see a internal medicine doctor and I had an endoscopy where the result show I have mild gastritis in antrum area and H.Pylori positive. My symptom is difficulty in breathing, it felt like my stomach is making me hard to breathe I don't know how to explain this discomfort to the doctor. She prescribe me 1000mg amoxicillin&clarithromycin taken twice daily after food, nexium 40mg once daily in morning and Pepto Bismol taken twice daily. Result came back positive after 2 months. So I am stressed out and decided to go see another well known gastro specialist and he prescribed me amoxicillin 1000mg, tetracycline twice daily with food, raberprazole 40mg in the morning and raberprazole 20mg at night taken before food 30min, Bismuth 3 tablets twice daily before food. I am now waiting for 1 month in order to get tested again, hopefully the result will be negative.
My question is since I am living with such a big family, I cannot cook for myself, I just have this anxiety of catching Hpylori again even before the re-test date, I always wonder if the cook had wash hands properly, is the food hygenic? The only action I can take now is to eat separately from the family so I can't infect them and they can't infect me, but this is such a difficult thing to do, I felt like I cannot go and dine outside because I am scare of hygiene reasons.
Is there any medication like Pylopass or anything that can help prevent reinfection in my case? Vietnam happen to collaborate with a German company that manufacture Pylopass and they advertise that this medication can help reduce Hpylori load to negative result after taking for 3 months, is this true?
Thank you for reading

First of all, the combination of Tetracycline and Amoxicillin is not my favourite. I think the cure rate is not very good. But who knows, it may work on you. Just remember that there is a couple of other combinations too. So dont worry too much.

Then, it's not common to catch H. pylori from contaminated food, especially when they are cooked. H. pylori doesnt survive very well outside human body. A bit of salt, chilli, garlic, etc can kill H. pylori. However, it would be good that everyone under the same roof to be treated to prevent cross infection from toilet or uncleaned mouth.

meanwhile, get everyone under the same roof to brush their teeth, especially in the morning.

Thank you for your reply,
Honestly it’s very hard to get everyone tested because they will look at me with weird eyes. All I can do now is to avoid getting infected from them. They have this habit of picking up food straight from the pot with their used spoons, I can’t really go to them and say hey can you not dip your spoon into the pot. It’s quite hard living with a lot of people.
Do you do any research about Pylopass? The description of the drug seem too good to be true for me.

I have no experienced with Pylopass.
A brief search on google showed that it can reduce the breath test value, which I personally think that it's useless.
I agree that the breath test value is correlated with the amount of HP. However, it's not correlated with the severity.
Cancer patients can have very low breath test value because H. pylori doesnt like to live in cancerous stomach.
I have also seen patients with a breath test value over 8000 and remain asymptomatic.

anyway, as for your concern, I dont think dipping spoon into the food is the primary route of H. pylori transmission. You can promote teeth brushing in the house. At least that is something not "weird".

We have done a small study. People who brushes their teeth in the morning, there is hardly any H. pylori in the mouth for the rest of the day.

Hi hello expert
Quick question if u have h pylori but no acid reflux is it still possible to pass it on to others ie how does it get from stomach to mouth with no reflux I ask as u mentioned brushing teeth can help stop transmitting the bacteria
Thanks xx

Very good question. I think nothing is 100%. I believe that in the middle of the night when you are asleep, you may have some acid reflux that you dont know. Then H. pylori can present in the mouth.

Hi thanks for your reply if I understand correctly h pylori cannot live in the mouth? So I'm guessing first thing in the morning if not brushing teeth is when your more likely to transmit is this correct?

I also have a history of dieting and exercising a lot/stress when gastritis / an ulcer formed for me- my tests show h pylori negative though. I think it's a full body systemic response and when we don't eat enough our body's immune system weakens because we don't have the energy to support all of our bodily processes.
