Re: Talicia (rifabutin, Amox, PPI) said to cause male infertility (can’t be true please)

Post by Helico_expert »

Talicia is fairly new on the market. But the combination is not novel.
PPI and amoxicillin is pretty safe. Rifabutin can be problematic to some people.
Rifabutin is normally reserved for tuberculosis patients. Therefore, the widespread use of this drug may lead to resistance in TB.

my other criticism to this treatment is the use of omeprazole. It's an old drug, which is less effective in some people. They should have used the newer PPI, such as esomepraole or pantoprazole or rabeprazole.

We frequently use rifabutin on our patients. We have about 1 in 100 patients end up in emergency, but nothing serious. It's more of a precaution protocol.

Thank you. Just to be clear, it’s a low chance it could have effected me in terms of fertility?

hmm it's a hard question for me.

anyway, I have found this disclosure of rifabutin from Australia
http://secure.healthlinks.net.au/conten ... mycoc11210

In Section 4.6 it says.
Effects on fertilityStudies in rats at oral doses of rifabutin at 160mg/kg/day have shown impairment of spermatogenesis and effects on the gonads without any significant effect on the numbers of live offspring.
it uses 160mg/kg/day.. I think that is a very high dose used.
