diagnosis

Ulcers of the duodenum and stomach are called peptic ulcers. H.pylori causes most ulcers; other causes are aspirin and arthritis type drugs (NSAIDS). Ulcers can also be in the oesophagus but these are not caused by H.pylori.

diagnosis

Post by Stubrumcc »

I have had stomach pain, ache, bloatedness, wind for 2 months now. I had a duodenal ulcer 20 years ago. Finally saw a gastroenterologist this week and asked about helicobacter testing. He said that he wasnt going to test me for it because helicobacter did not cause pain. He said the research / stats were weak. He also said that because my symptoms were not totally relieved by Pariet then I dont have an ulcer. I am confused! Everything I have read suggests to me that I could have a Helicobacter infection. I go back to see him next week but I am wondering if I should get a second opinion. Is there any truth to what he said?

I have been infected with Helicobacter Pylori and I can confirm that it can cause A LOT of pain. If I were you, I would definately get tested for it. You might not have it, your symptoms may be caused by another gastrointestinal problem but you won't know until you get tested. You can do a simple breath test which is very reliable and non-intrusive.

You can have Helicobacter Pylori and NOT have an ulcer, as it was my case. I had severe gastrites and Helicobacter Pylori which caused me a great amount of pain in the upper abdomen, bloating, burping, vomiting, nausea... So not having an ulcer doesn't necessarily mean you don't have Helicobacter Pylori.

Did you get tested for Helicobacter Pylori when you had the duodenal ulcer? HP is known to be the cause of the majority of ulcers.

My advice to you is get tested.
Please check the FAQ. If you haven't tried it yet, click here, and look inside the FAQ's. Your question might already be answered.

thanks Luci2010,
The previuos ulcer was diagnosed with barium meal in the days before Helicobacter testing. I was 18 years old at the time. I am going to ask to be tested for Helicobacter next week nad if the Doc says no then I will get a second opinion. Thanks for your input.

Hi, many months later I see your post. If you did have a test and were positive, I expect you have been treated by now. Post a follow up if you get time. It looks like common sense won you over more than your doctor's advice (which I did'nt agree with either).
Check the link below for information on hard-to-treat cases. Then search the forums for questions and answers similar to yours.

Hi Everyone,

I am new here and I think I can add something here on this topic. Actually Stub's condition and symptoms showed that he was having ulcer but he did not mentioned any abdominal pain. This is the reason why I can't say that he has an ulcer. Abdominal pain is the mail symptom in ulcer as I know.
