Round 2 of antibiotics but bloating not going away.

Post by ahmed_jehanzeb »

In December 2021 I completed the course of metronidazole, omeprazole, pepto-bismol and tetracycline for 14 days.

Tested for H. Pylori in February 2021 and confirmed negative.

Around September of 2022, I started feeling extremely bloated (more than normal).

The bloating was temporarily resolved by taking pantoprozole.

As per my doctor, pantoprozole should not be taken for an extended period of time. So I stopped taking it.

The bloating was getting worse in the meantime.

In June of 2023, I re-tested for H. Pylori and was found positive.

Starting second round of two week course [262mg pink bismuth, metronidazole 500mg, omeprazole 20mg and tetracycline 500mg].

I am 5 days into this course and the excessive bloating is not going away.

I also have two belches every time I wake up in the morning.

If I eat small amounts of food, it creates an empty stomach feeling and the acid starts to gnaw in my stomach.

If I eat a moderate meal, the excessive bloating appears.

Please help!

it's normally very hard to catch H. pylori again. But it's not impossible.
Have you tested everyone at home? normally you catch it from someone really close to from kissing and sharing food. Maybe you should get them tested and treated to prevent reinfection.

Assuming your test in Feb 2021 is accurate. You have true eradication of HP then.

Then the same treatment should work for the reinfection. Have you done another testing to see if your 2nd round of treatment work?

I understand your frustration with the bloating and other symptoms despite the H. Pylori treatment. While I can't give medical advice, here are some insights and suggestions that might be helpful:

H. Pylori Treatment:

Timeframe: It's normal to experience some lingering discomfort during H. Pylori eradication treatment. Give the full course (14 days) a chance to work before expecting complete resolution.
Alternative Regimen: Sometimes, the Connections NYT initial treatment course isn't fully effective. If the bloating persists after completing the antibiotics, your doctor might consider a different combination or extended duration of medication.
Bloating and Other Symptoms:

Causes: Bloating can have various causes besides H. Pylori. These might include:
Diet: Food intolerances (lactose, FODMAPs), excessive gas-producing foods (beans, cruciferous vegetables).
Functional dyspepsia: Chronic indigestion with no clear cause.
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO): An overabundance of bacteria in the small intestine.
Investigating Further: If the bloating persists after H. Pylori treatment, your doctor might recommend additional tests to explore other potential causes. This could include stool tests, breath tests, or imaging studies.
Management Strategies:

Diet: Consider keeping a food diary to identify potential food triggers for bloating. You could explore a low FODMAP diet with a dietician's guidance.
Probiotics: Certain probiotic strains might help restore gut balance after antibiotic treatment. Consult your doctor for recommendations.
Stress Management: Stress can worsen digestive issues. Relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing might help.
Here are some next steps:

Discuss with your Doctor: After completing the current treatment, discuss your persistent bloating and other symptoms with your doctor. They can review your test results and recommend further investigation or management strategies.
Be Patient: Healing after H. Pylori eradication and addressing other potential causes of bloating can take time.
Additional Notes:

Morning Belching: Two belches in the morning might not be a major concern. However, if it becomes excessive or bothersome, mention it to your doctor.
Empty Stomach and Gnawing: This could indicate a need for smaller, more frequent meals to avoid overloading your stomach.
Remember: I am not a medical professional, and this information is intended for general knowledge only. Don't hesitate to seek professional medical advice from your doctor for proper diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan.

Normally, H. pylori is quite difficult to contract again. However, it's not unfeasible.
Have you given everyone their home test? Usually, you get it from a close friend or relative through food sharing and kissing. It could be a good idea to have them checked and treated to stop reinfection.

Re-infection with H. pylori is often quite challenging. Still, it's not impossible.
Has everyone received their home exam from you? It is usually contracted by sharing meals and kissing from a close friend or family member. To prevent reinfection, it could be a good idea to get them examined and treated. slice masters

The persistence of symptoms during the treatment course is not uncommon, as it can take time for the antibiotics and other medications to fully eradicate the H. pylori infection quordle
