Update on endoscope, questions

Post by newpylori »

First I find it strange that one topic that I posed a month or so ago has completely disappeared! It does show up in some cases but at most other times, it is gone without trace! Does anyone have this issue?

I was a HP patient, eradicated in Jan 2019 after taking antibiotics, confirmed by scope in May 2019.

Anyway, I had a second scope after 3 years and also a UBT. The earlier scope (2019/05) had shown focal IM and also gastritis all over. So that doctor asked me to re-test in 3 years. Time flies!

This time, the doctor wrote Normal in all the part by part listing (antrum fundus etc) but ended overall summary with "Gastritis involving antrum and body". Post procedure diagnosis listed as 'Other specified gastritis' . Biopsy also confirmed "No HP identified,... no significant activity, IM, atrophy, displasia or malignancy is seen' on both tissue samples. The UBT also was negative for HP. He also said no need to repeat scope, at least not for 5 years.

I am M/56

Some questions for helico-expert or others be grateful if you can reply:

1. Can IM vanish after 3 years?
2. Does this mean my stomach is healing? Doctor said the gastritis he found is normal and did not prescribe any PPI.
3. I am still getting bloat which sometimes lasts days or weeks and also slight burning feel at times. I am not exercising much diet control except when really flared up. Is this the earlier damage of HP?
4. Is my prognosis good? Or should I get other parts (colonoscopy) tested to see what is causing bloat? I am somewhat overweight and also cleared the fecal blood test about a year ago.

Thanks in advance!!

Hi,

I am sure your post is not lost can be found by clicking on the post you had previously posted.

your recent endoscopy outcome is fantastic.
1. Can IM vanish after 3 years?
This topic is under constant debate. My personal opinion is that because intestinal cells cannot produce mucous, therefore, if your stomach acid is strong, the intestinal cells will eventually be destroyed and you can be back to normal.

2. Some gastritis can be very stubborn and refuse to retreat. But I believe that without H. pylori, the inflammation cells that lack stimulant to grow and expand will gradually die out. So stay positive.

3. It is common for the symptoms to persist even after HP eradication. We think that it is due to the long term damage left by HP. But, I think if you continue to live healthily, your stomach will eventually learn how to be normal again.

4. I think your prognosis is very good. I agree with the 5 years review. if you had never done a colonoscopy before, then why not. It's most probably not related to your bloating, but it's good to check for polyps. Overweight is associated with many diseases. So bringing your BMI back to normal will definitely help.

I think gastritis years after h pylori is common very common especially if you've had h pylori for years. It will weaken your stomach lining and if you want that gastritis (assuming its caused by a weakened stomach lining) to heal, you've got do a bland diet, there are tons of forums where you can get advice on it. After my third reinfection and after succesfully killing h pylori, it took only 6 months for all my reflux stomach burning to fully heal but i was very very strict during those 6 months through a bland diet. If your stomach has been really damaged it may take more work to heal it for you: maybe something like coating agents, or a small dose H2 blocker (PPIs are too strong imo and they may make things worse)...it depends.

If you keep eating junk food and acidic foods and alcohol and all of that, it can heal but it will take quite a long time to do so.
