After Antibiotic Treatment

Hi Everyone,

First of all I just want to say thank you to everyone in this forum, all your posts have helped me a lot. I was recently diagnosed with H-pylori after an endoscopy - which I had to request after years of complaining of stomach pain that my Dr. said was just constipation. Also for about 8 months now I've had terrible fatigue, which the Dr's also had no idea what it was (I'm hoping it's from H-Pylori because then I may have some other mystery issue) I was put on the triple therapy for 2 weeks plus Bismuth. It was hell for me, I stopped for a day and a half in the middle but then I got more sick so I started to take it again, then towards the end I couldn't do the full day dosages, it was just too much. So there are some pills left over that I never took.

For a week after I was done I felt groggy, but it felt like I was getting back to normal and that my energy was finally going back up. The week following that, which is now, I feel terrible, I have no energy, I wake up just as dead as when I went to bed, I have to just stop in the middle of the day because I feel like there's 0 energy left in the tank, I get sweats, I feel like I have a fever but I don't, I'm getting all these weird muscle aches in my back, and I feel nauseous always. I also don't have much of an appetite which is only bad because then I feel like it contributes more to feeling so tired all the time.

I just started to take digestive enzymes, mastica and a probiotic.

Do you guys think these are normal things after taking the medication, or do you think the H pylori isn't gone, it hasn't been a month yet so I can't get tested to see if it's gone, hopefully in 2 weeks I can. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

you are probably experiencing the side effect from antibiotics. the side effects normally kicks in around day 3 and gradually build up depending on your body's metabolism. Anyway, the side effect should gradually go away after stopping. normally back to normal within a week. If the side effect persists, then you need to talk to your doctor.

Yes, you need to wait for a month before the test. prof Marshall had some very lucky patients who tested negative after one day of treatment. So you may be the lucky one. Stay positive!

Hi ,

I have had exactly the same symptoms as you since I finished my treatment 3 weeks ago. I had a few random moments during the last week in which I felt "normal" but overall most days are miserable with nausea, fatigue, light head, back aches etc...

I changed my diet 2 weeks ago and cut all wheat, sugar, coffee, lactoes, alcohol and all process foods. I have also been taking mastic gum but unfurtunately I haven't had any improvement thus far.. Yesterday I bought licorice root and after making one cup of it ( like tea) I felt better for a few hours. Today I had the same with also good results just for a couple of hours. The issue with licorice is that it has side effects so I am reluctant to having more than one cup per day.

I am not sure as to where to go from here. I will have another test done next week and hoping it will come back negative. I don't think my body will be able to resist another antibiotic treatment. As for the symptoms I am hoping they will eventually fade away if the bacteria is gone, although I haven had any reassurance from my doctor. In fact he doesn't seem to know much about this...

If anybody out there have had a similar experience as us and are now on the other side it will be good hear from them. I am sure it will lift our moral :)

Thanks so much for this reply, it helps knowing I'm not alone. Hopefully it's just the antibiotics doing a number on us and soon we'll be all cured and back to normal. Someone suggested drinking apple cider vinegar, I tried that today and it gave me some energy but it also gave me nausea, I drink Kombucha too, sometimes it helps to settle my stomach.

If you start feeling better please post and let me know.

Hang in there guys its a dreadfull bug takes the life right out of us 🤔 ive been where you are hardly able to drag myself to the bathroom some days . After first treatment i was still very ill and found out it had not worked 😔 i dreaded the thoughts of a second treatment after the first left me so ill with side effects i ended up in the er 4 times in 14 days . But the second treatment left me with absolutely no side effects at all and now 5 months after treatment ive got a negative breath test and feel brilliant again 😀 i also found the lack of appetite didnt help not been able to stomach food and was dangerously under weight after losing nearlly 3 stone because of it i went on ensure plus advance which i found help massively to give some energy it takes time for the stomach to heal but it does heal slowly
Wishing u all the best in your fight against this nasty bug x x

I know this is an old post . I just finished therapy for H pylori. I’m one day post treatment and am suffering from horrible fatigue and grogginess. Like I’m coming down with the flu. I am praying this will get better . I feel hopeless . I was diagnosed by endoscopy. I had severe weight loss, stomach bloat , constipatiom, belching, and low energy. As well as hair loss and I’m only 33 years old . Did you guys get better ? Is there any hope for me ?

Do you know if you might be anemic? I have heard that eradicating H.Pylori will help restore iron levels but might be helpful to ask your GP to get you a blood test (full iron panel, with ferritin, etc. and B12) to see if that may be contributing to your symptoms?
