Tested Positive, I think. Need Expert advice please.

The various unpleasant manifestations of Helicobacter can be described here. Remember however that the great majority of persons with Hp have no symptoms that they are aware of and consider themselves normal.

Tested Positive, I think. Need Expert advice please.

Hello all, thank you for this discussion board and the wealth of the information available regarding this bug.

I am a 35 yearold male who has started experiencing strange issues about 2 weeks ago where my stool would be mushy and yellow. I have not been sick for years and have not taken antibiotics for many years so I became worried.

My stomach started making very loud gurgling noises, especially after I eat. TMI: In the morning I would go to the toilet and have one mushy yellowish stool followed by another even looser but not quiet watery stool about 2 hours later and then I'm fine for the rest of day, with minor weak stomach feeling generally until the afternoon. Then the rest of the day I am pretty fine.

In the first week, I had pressure in my bladder with a constant urge to urinate but that stopped after about 2 or 3 days. I thought it was a UTI so I got urine test but it came back negative.

I had some pain in the abdomen and back but its very mild and random. Also, I've had GERD for years and it flares up randomly also, generally after drinking lots of Soda or Alcohol, but I stopped alcohol long time ago. I have been drinking loads of diet soda like Pepsi Max daily for years.

My wife is a nurse and she said I should get tested for H Pylori as my grandfather (had bleeding ulcers) in law, grandmother in law and mother in law all had H Pylori about 2 months ago and got treated for it. My father also had it about 2 years ago and got treated for bleeding ulcer.

Anyways, I did the Urea Breath Test and my result is 173 (under 50 is negative, 50 to 200 questionable? and 200+ is positive) but in the report it states that I am "Borderline Positive" despite being under 200.

My first doctor prescribed me Nexium HP7 and I went and purchased it but have not started taking it as I would rather avoid antibiotics is possible.

The second doctor and my prefered doctor said not to treat it as its not concretely positive.

I thought I would address this issue by asking for an opinion from experts on this board as I feel they have much more knowledge then the GPs. Interestingly, on my Breath Test report it actually states to visit "www.helio.com" for more info.

My concern is that I am going on a 5 week trip to third world countries in 2 weeks and am wondering what my best course of action is. Could the infection get much worse in that time frame if I leave it untreated? Or am I better off treating it right now on the 7 day antibiotic and PPI course?

Any advice would be highly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

I agree with your 2nd doctor that you should not take treatment unless it's certain that you have H. pylori. Besides, the stool color that you described, doesnt sound like H. pylori. It's probably more to do with IBS. Perhaps you should also check with a dietitian to find out if you any food allergies.

You can also get a blood test done to have a quick idea of your HP infection status. If it's negative, then dont worry about treatment. If it's positive, then you will need to double confirm by UBT. A positive blood test means you had been exposed to H. pylori before, but not necessary that you have it now. So a negative blood test is almost always accurate. But a positive blood test will need to be reconfirmed.

The guideline for borderline positive UBT patients is to get another UBT in at least one month gap. If you are over 50 yrs old, you should do an endoscopy to find out more about your stomach condition. The gastroenterologist can test your stomach acid to see if that's the reason for your borderline result. (UBT require the stomach to be very acidic to work). Also, a biopsy can be taken to see if you have metaplasia or atrophic gastritis, which are both more severe form of gastritis.

I am curious which breath test company did your doctor give you? I would like to know who promoted our website, www.helico.com.

Hi Helio_Expert, your reply is much appreciated.

I am 35. I have had a blood test done as well when I did the UBT. All blood test results came back good. Even white blood cell count was good. Is there some specific thing in the blood test to look for H. Pylori infection? Surely the first doctor would have included H. Pylori test in my blood test since he was the one who ordered the UBT. Not sure if he did though.

Considering my UBT test not exactly being positive, would I still be ok to delay treatment for another 2 months while I am overseas? Could I take Nexium HP7 with me while travelling and take it if symptoms increase? Is there anything I can do to prevent increase in infection?

The company who referenced this site is MedLab in Auburb Australia.

Thank you

There is specific test for H. pylori antibody in blood test. If you did not see that in the report, your doctor probably did not order it. It's not expensive, should have included.

You can delay the treatment 2 months later.

Why is everyone in such a hurry to ascribe to themselves the first diagnosis they come across? Moreover, both doctors and patients are in a hurry with this. I understand that it brings calmness. After all, if you at least roughly imagine what is wrong with you, it is easier for you to plan further actions. But this is so dangerous! I hope you were able to find a neutral treatment option. Yes, it's good if you can manage symptoms. But you should never rush to treat the root cause if you are not sure about it. I found out about my illness when I was preparing for training as a phlebotomist https://www.exploremedicalcareers.com/phlebotomist/. I had to learn a lot of new information, among which there was an article about my symptoms. I decided to check it out. It turned out that I came to the doctor on time. Then it could have been worse.
