Chronic Gastritis Fear

The various unpleasant manifestations of Helicobacter can be described here. Remember however that the great majority of persons with Hp have no symptoms that they are aware of and consider themselves normal.

I trust your specialist. If your first endoscope did not see anything abnormal. white spot is common. then there is no need for another endoscope so quickly. like i said earlier.. it'll take years for the condition to deteriorate.

Hi there.

I just noticed i had a flare up on Tuesday due to spicey food or milk. My stomach is sore and feels like hunger pain. I never had this in a while. Can you tell me if flare ups during chronic gastritis is normal? If the gastritis is irritated can it cause ulcers and lead to more probelms ?

I am taking omez 20mg daily but today I'm going to get my script for nexium 20mg. Doc said i need to be on it for 6 months.

The burning has stop but it just feels sore and i dont really feel hungry.

Also no update from bloods as yet.

yup. flare up once a while is normal. but you have to make sure you are now free of H. pylori. otherwise this symptom will never stop.

Hi Helico_Expert

Just came across a research article that states that chonic gastritis will not heal and it leads to atrophic gastritis amd cancer. This had caused me some worry.

Whats your view on this as i do have health anxiety?

Also whenever i google chonic gastritis it talks about atrophic and thats the next stage. I already feel like i have it because of google.

after eradication of H. pylori, gastritis will definitely heal. only untreated patients will lead to atrophy.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16246182
After H. pylori eradication, subjects with body atrophic gastritis showed long-term improvement of physiological gastric function, reflected by significantly and continually increasing sPGI levels over a 4-year period.

Hi Helico_expert,

I am still waiting for my blood test results to check if hpylori is present. I will tell my physician that i want to do a breathe test as well.

I read that taking PPI for too long can cause atrophic gastritis.
I have been prescribed 6 months of nexium 20mg daily. Is this safe ?

People take PPI for years or decades.

I do not believe PPI can cause atrophic gastritis.

Nevertheless, if H. pylori is truly eradicated, you can adjust your PPI dose accordingly. If you feel good, take less nexium. If you feel bad, take more nexium.

Only when H. pylori is truly eradicated, your stomach has a chance to recover. Otherwise, you are just wasting time waiting for a recovery that will not come.

Hi Helico_expert,

My blood test are positive for hpylori and my physician put me on a 7 day triple therapy.

the meds are :

- 2x amoxicillin 500mg twice a day
- 1x flagyl twice a day
- 1x nexium 20mg once a day.

My physician also advised me to come back after a month so he can test if its eradicated. I did tell him i want a breath test but he told me once i am done with this treatment he will do a breath test for me.

- is this an effective treatment ?
- and is this treatment good enough to cure chronic gastritis and not let it progress to atrophic ? ( I really need to stop googling as it is making me think worst case scenarios).
-I also asked him again about cancer risks and atrophic risks. He told me it takes decades to end up with atrophic and its mostly found in older patients 50 years +. From your research is this true ? He also told me that untreated patients lead to atrophic and IM .

Your doctor is right. It will take decades to worsen. So please do not worry too much.

Your treatment is standard. it's the first line treatment. the cure rate is usually around 80%. if it failed, there is other treatment, so dont worry.

Nevertheless, you can boost cure rate by increasing amoxicillin and PPI dose. discuss with your doctor about it.
