Nexium Hp7 triple therapy

The most popular treatments consist of two antibiotics (one of which is usually clarithromycin) plus a strong acid blocker such as omeprazole (PriLosec, Nexium, Somac, Zoton, etc.). Treatment is for 7-10 days. Cure rate is about 85%

Nexium Hp7 triple therapy

Post by Mims »

I was diagnosed with h.pylori in February and was prescribed Nexium hp7 triple therapy for 7 days ( Amoxicilin 500mg, clarithtomycin 500mg and esomeprazole 20mg). I however only managed to take the medication for one day and woke up to a full on heart attack type feeling, with pain mostly radiating on my right upper quadrant, was taken to ER and was diagnosed with gallstones and a bad gallbladder that needed emergency operation. The surgeons advised me to stop taking the triple therapy and concentrate on healing from the surgery first. I had no knowledge that i had gallstones or any such problems prior to starting the triple therapy. Anyway I have recovered some what from the surgery and I now wanted to treat h.pylori. I returned to my Gp and i told him I want to treat the h.pylori again and that I had only managed to take triple therapy for one day. Now he tells me that I can just take the left over 6 days treatment from the pack I couldnt complete and that I should be ok. Does this sound correct or should i go and see another doctor?

Its confusing and impossible to work out exactly, but I kind of agree with your doctor. Just take all the antibiotics you have, don't forget the Nexium (more is better so I often give 40 mg 3x daily). If you fail treatment then nothing is lost because it means the bacterium was resistant to clarithromycin already.
If you need further advice, send another follow-up post with any new information and breath test results post therapy. Anecdotally, I knew a patient who was cured with just one day therapy. Usually we need at least 5 days. Best cure is with 14 days but it is very tedious and not much extra benefit.
Good Luck.

Thank you so much for your response. I will take the remaining 6 days of the Nexium Hp7 as recommended. I also managed to get a repeat prescription for Esomeprazole (40mg) for 30 days and it says to take 1 tablet daily. So I am a little confused on how I should take the esomeprazole (40mg) with the Nexium Hp.7 which has 20mg, twice daily.
The dosages for the NP7 says
Nexium 20mg-1 tablet morning and evening
Amoxil capsules 500mg- 2 capsules morning and evening
Klacid tablets (500mg)-1 tablet morning and evening.

Can i just ignore the esomeprazole 20mg in the Nexium HP7 pack and take the dosage as follows:
Esomeprazole 40mg- 1 tablet x3 -morning,afternoon and evening
Amoxil capsules 500mg- 2 capsules morning and evening
Klacid tablets 500mg- 1 tablet morning and evening

Also when I am finished taking the triple therapy , should i continue taking the remaining Esomeprazole 40mg,once daily till 2 weeks before I go for the breath test?

Thank you so much for your assistance, I will definately come back with results after my breath test.

yes. you are allow to replace 20mg with 40mg Esomeprazole. It'll give you higher cure rate.

You can also take two tablets of the 20mg esomeprazole, then it would be the same as taking 1x 40mg tablet.

After you finish everything, wait wait at least 2 weeks before going for the follow up breath test.

Hi,

I realise I never came back with a reply on how I went. I had a urea breath test in july that came up negative for h.pylori after taking the 6 days of triple therapy HP7 with a 3x of Esomeprozole. I actually waited 2 months to do the retest ro give any residual h.pylori time to grow if it was still there . Anyway 2 month on and I am still having problems with reflux and stomach pains so my docter ordered an Endoscopy. The endoscopy showed no h.pylori but I have Bile Reflux, gastritis and deuodenitis which the doctors think was caused by H.pylori and gallbladder removal. I was prescribed Domperidon for the reflux and Nexium for gastritis for 6 months. Im just wondering is anyone here got gastritis or bile reflux after h pylori and what they took for treatment. Is it advisable to take PPI for 6 months continually to cure hpylori induced gastritis?? Thank you so so much for all the help you give on this forum.

Same here, h pylori was erradicated in april, endoscopy showed just a little inflammation, but i still have a lot of reflux and a little of pain on my stomach, the doctor just told me to keep on PPI till i feel better.
